- An excellent effort by Toshiba
A few short months ago I bought the Xbox add-on to try the HD-DVD waters, and have been nothing but impressed, so when my standard DVD player died (my 7th one in 8 years, I’m a very heavy DVD watcher), I decided to invest in a player that will (hopefully) last (I also purchased a 4 year warranty this time).
The player itself is beautiful, both in appearance and on screen (watching on 1080p Samsung LCD). Picture quality of HD-DVD is, as expected, superb, and DVD upscaling is the best I have ever seen

- Great picture, but DOES NOT pass the new Audio Formats

I bought this player probably without doing my homework thoroughly; even all the literature says that it passes the new audio formats (True HD, DD+, etc), this player does not pass these formats via the HDMI cable to be decoded by the AVR. It makes its own decoding, and as the Toshiba customer service rep said, it passes “its own version” of the new formats, and only in 5.1
The ONLY player that as of today can pass the new audio formats via the HDMI cable to be decoded by a capable AVR is the HD-A35.

- Great Price For a Good Player
Toshiba Hd A30 1080P Hd Dvd Player is a very good player for HD and SD DVDs… I have had problems playing SD DVDs at 1080p/24 though, which might just be because this player lacks the horse power to do the up-conversion while forcing play at 24fps… I know the hd-a35 does do this well.. but it has a better video processor.. regardless at 1080p/60 everything works great, SD DVDs look great and so do HD DVDs… I switch over to 1080p/24 for HD DVDs and they are so silky smooth.. for $99 on a refurb, I can’t complain at all. :)

Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd PlayerThe Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd Player is simply the best HD or Blu-Ray player available today when you factor in price, picture, sound and appearance. High definition playback delivers 720p/1080i resolution at a transfer rate higher than DVD or even HDTV, resulting in a more detailed, realistic picture. Advanced audio, including Dolby® TrueHD, Dolby® Digital Plus and DTS® HD (core only), along with legacy formats including Dolby® Digital and DTS® bring an increased sonic realism to movie soundtracks. The Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd Player player makes use of this conduit by up-converting the standard DVD picture resolution of 720p or 1080i. This makes a DVD player with an HDMI™ connection the perfect match for today’s digital televisions. And because this conversion is performed in the player, the signal remains free frome excessive digital to analog artifacts.

  • HD DVD playback
  • Up-Conversion for all Standard DVD Titles
  • Multi Format Compatibility
  • Preprogramed remote with glow print

- Great intro player-owned since Nov 2007 never a problem!
Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd Player is excellent DVD player, one of the best I’ve ever seen. It upconverts regular DVDs better than almost every other DVD player I’ve seen and I have used Toshiba’s SD-5000 (too dark) and the Oppo DV-970HD (close but not quite as sharp). This DVD player makes DVDs look very close to high def DVDs. One feature this DVD player has that is not talked about a lot is a Dialog Enhancement. It makes sure that the dialog doesn’t get lost in music or sound fxs and it really works. You can play movies at a lower volume and still hear what’s being said.

- Excellent HD-DVD and upgrade Player
I own both BD and HD DVD formats, and purchased this before Black Friday in 2007 for under $90. It is a great player, that has played every movie I have played, and the picture/fuction quality is oustanding. For the price, very robust. Ironically it played movies, that got stuck in the more sensitive A35 (which I also own), along with BD machines.

- This is the best HD player for the money, period!
If you are still trying to sort out what HD or Blu-ray player to buy I think this review will assist you tremendously. I am somewhat of a tech geek and I own both the Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd Player and the Phillips BDP 9000 Blu-Ray Players. I am not a SONY hater as I own a 50 inch SONY TV and love it.
The Toshiba Hd A2 Hd Dvd Player is simply the best HD or Blu-Ray player available today when you factor in price, picture, sound and appearance. To begin with ignore the 1 or 2 star ratings for this player. Those usually are from people who are upset because the do not have an HDMI ready TV and can’t produce the proper HD picture. If you do not have a TV that accepts an HDMI connection (or DVI connection) you should not buy any HD or Blu-Ray player.

- Very good DVD player
I paid $60 bucks for this DVD player and the picture quality is excellent! HD DVD looks really sharp and my old DVD looks really clear in 1080i. But this DVD player has a problem is the first one I got constantly hang during power up, need to unplug the power core to reset it. Return it and got a second one and second one works without problem. This is why I did not rate 5 star for this, besides the hang problem, this is a excellent player.

- Fantastic Hi Def player for a great price.
I also have the A2, and prefer this third generation unit but the A2 is still a solid, and great machine. The A3 upconverts DVDs beautifully, watching DisneyDVDs is great and they look amazing. Of course HD DVDs also look great, especially Troy Directors Cut, Transformers looks beyond words – just an amazing movie experience, and The Matrix is gorgeous. I also recommend Shrek the Third next week, that will be gorgeous too. Finally, the A3 is a solid player, better load times than the A2, slightly smaller, a beautiful chassis that really compliments your HT and Toshiba REGZA or any piano finished black TVs, and a great value. I recommend it.

- Great HD and HD Upconverter
I love my HD-A3, it was affordable and I am buying HD DVD titles for a lot less than Blu-Ray. I have a Blu-ray player as well, a Sony S550, and it can not upconvert standard DVDs and good as my Toshiba Hd A3 720P 1080I Hd Dvd Player. I love both formats, but HD DVD is saving me money on similar titles that are out on BD. Buy this while you can, it’s a great deal.

I needed a cheap DVD player

Posted in Toshiba DVD Player on November 12th, 2009 by DVD Poster – Be the first to comment

toshiba_hd-a2_hd_dvd_playerMy less-than-enthusiastic review is based on what my expectations for the player were, not on its actual performance.

I needed a cheap DVD player to go with a cheap TV I have that only takes S-Video input. So I bought this Toshiba SD4200 DVD player specifically because, at least at the time of purchase, both Amazon and the Toshiba website indicated that it had S-Video output. When it arrived, however, I discovered it did not (only component and RCA). A Toshiba rep confirmed the website error and apologized. To compensate, I had to buy an RCA to S-Video adapter, which luckily only cost about $10.

Unfortunately, this was not my only disappointment. The image of the player on both Amazon and Toshiba would lead you to believe that the display includes track timing, when really the only thing that shows is the track number. Given that track timing and S-Video were the ONLY requirements I had in mind before buying a DVD player, I was rather irked to discover this. Another strange feature I’ve never seen before is the lack of track buttons on the player itself; you can only skip between tracks using the remote control. I should have noticed this before buying, since it’s right there in the pictures, but it just didn’t occur to me. This is only a minor annoyance, but it’s still something that probably would have led me to purchase a different player, especially given the large number of available options.

These problems could all have been avoided had I looked at the actual user manual from Toshiba online, which gave proper information and images. So I’ve learned to check the manual before buying electronics online, rather than just rely on basic information from the vendor and/or the manufacturer.

As for the performance of the player, it seems to be doing fine thus far (only a few hours of use), and I’ve had good experience with Toshiba products in the past.
